The train

The railway’s booking system lists 1-Hour Holiday Express departures on every day from Dec 19 through Dec 24. Most Holiday Express dates other than Light Up day run at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.; check your date when you book, because many departures were already sold out by mid-October. The Blue Ridge Railway asks you to arrive 45 minutes before departure. The longer Pavilion train runs on Saturday, Dec 19, from 2 to 6 p.m., with a layover in McCaysville and Copperhill.

The theater

Blue Ridge Community Theater stages The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical through Dec 20, Thursday to Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. It runs about 1 hour 20 minutes and is rated G. Buy only through the theater’s Etix link or its box office at (706) 632-9191; third-party tickets may be void.

The Art Center

Dec 23 and 24: winding down

The Art Center begins its Christmas break on Dec 23 and stays closed until Jan 10, per the BRMAA 2026 schedule. The Holiday Express keeps running through Christmas Eve.

For lights, the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds walk-through show in Hiawassee is open every night from Dec 17 to 24, 6 to 9 p.m., at $12 per person with children 12 and under free. On Christmas Eve it switches to drive-thru only, $25 per car, without Santa, train rides or vendors. It is closed Christmas Day. More options are on our Christmas lights page.

Christmas Day: stock up before

Mercier Orchards is closed on Christmas Day. Its bakery takes orders for Christmas bakery trays by phone at 706-632-3411, and its market keeps its usual hours the rest of the week (Friday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). We found no published list of which groceries, pharmacies or restaurants open on Christmas Day, so call ahead rather than counting on a store being open.

Town offices follow their own calendar. Blue Ridge City Hall hasn’t posted its 2026 closings; in 2025 it closed at 2 p.m. on Dec 23 and reopened Dec 26.

Weather and daylight

The winter solstice, Monday, Dec 21, has a 5:30 p.m. sunset in Blue Ridge, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. If you’re driving to a cabin for the first time, aim to arrive in daylight.

For December, the nearest NOAA station with temperature normals, Blairsville Experiment Station, averages a 52.5°F high and a 28.7°F low, with 5.46 inches of precipitation and 1.2 inches of snow (a provisional normal). Roads, driveways and parking

This part is general advice, not data. Mountain driveways can be steep, gravel or shaded, and a road that’s fine at 2 p.m. can freeze after dark. Before you arrive, ask the host whether the driveway is paved, how steep it is, and what they suggest if there’s ice. Bring a flashlight, and don’t plan a late-night first arrival in an unfamiliar car.

Downtown, the railway notes that weekends bring heavy traffic and limited parking, that Main Street parking is limited to three hours, and that there are paid lots near the depot. From Atlanta, the Chamber’s route is I-75 north to I-575, which becomes the Georgia Mountain Parkway (Hwy 515), then about 55 miles to Blue Ridge.

The tax line on your bill

The Fannin County Chamber lists the hotel/motel excise tax at 6% in unincorporated Fannin County and 8% in the City of Blue Ridge, plus a $5-per-day transportation assessment.
