Christmas in Blue Ridge with kids: an age-by-age plan

The short answer

For Christmas in Blue Ridge, Georgia with kids, build the trip around Santa in the downtown park (noon to 4:15 p.m. on November 27 and 28, 2026), the 1-Hour Holiday Express train and the Gingerbread Village. Book the train first. Many departures were already sold out by mid-October, and infants ride free.

With kids in Blue Ridge, Georgia, three things carry a Christmas trip: Santa in the downtown park, the 1-Hour Holiday Express train and the Gingerbread Village. Santa visits are free on Light Up weekend, November 27 and 28, 2026. The train costs money and sells out, so book it first. Then fill in around it by age.

What every family should know about the train

The 1-Hour Holiday Express is a one-hour ride with holiday music and ‘The Night Before Christmas’ story. Children receive a jingle bell and a candy cane and get a chance to see Santa (Blue Ridge Railway). Tickets are $56.99 for ages 13 and up and $46.99 for ages 2 to 12, and infants ride free, before booking fees and taxes (Fannin County Chamber). On Light Up Saturday, trains leave at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.; most other dates have 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Boarding starts 30 minutes before departure, and the railway suggests arriving 45 minutes early. Hot chocolate and snacks are sold in the concession car.

Many departures were already sold out by mid-October 2026. The Holiday Express guide has every date, and which train ride fits your family compares the options. Dates can change; confirm with the railway at (877) 413-8724.

Babies and toddlers (under 2)

  • Infants (0 to 23 months in the booking system) ride the Holiday Express free.
  • Strollers are allowed on the train but must be folded and stowed during the trip. There are about five steps up into a coach.
  • The train has 12 bathrooms and two baby changing stations, in Cars 332 and 405 (Blue Ridge Railway).
  • Santa’s line at Light Up runs from noon. Children already in line before 4:15 p.m. are seen until 4:30 p.m., then Santa leaves to get ready for the parade. Going early beats the nap-time crunch.
  • The accessible coach, #405, has a lift and an accessible restroom. Its seats are sold only by phone at 877-413-8724.

Ages 2 to 7

  • Pictures with Santa in the downtown park both days of Light Up weekend, noon to 4:15 p.m. (Light Up Blue Ridge). The organizer’s pages call the spot the gazebo or the pavilion.
  • Santa’s Mailbox: according to the Fannin County Chamber, children can write to Santa and get a pen keepsake, then a handwritten reply by mail a few days later.
  • Light Up McCaysville on Friday, November 27, 5 to 7 p.m., has Santa at the Riverwalk Shops and a tree lighting at dusk.
  • Southern Tree Plantation in Blairsville (Union County) has photos with Santa from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and pony rides from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 27 and 28. See tree farms.

Ages 8 to 12

  • The Gingerbread Village at The Art Center, 420 West Main Street, opens at noon on November 27 and runs until noon on December 22. Visitors vote for two People’s Choice awards, one for entries from grades 4 through 12 and one for adults. Want to enter? There are Elementary (grades 1 to 3 and 4 to 5) and Pre-School and Kindergarten categories, bases can be no larger than 12 by 12 inches, and entry forms are due by 5 p.m. Friday, November 13 (Light Up Blue Ridge). Details on the Gingerbread Village page.
  • Blue Ridge Community Theater stages The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical from November 27 to December 20, Thursday to Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. It runs about 1 hour 20 minutes including a 15-minute intermission and is rated G (Blue Ridge Community Theater). Buy only through the theater’s Etix link or the box office, (706) 632-9191.
  • The Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning starts at 8 a.m. at East Main and Church. Children 11 and under walk or run free with a registered adult.

  • The Blue Line in McCaysville, where you can stand in Georgia and Tennessee at once.
  • The Toccoa River Swinging Bridge, a 270-foot footbridge reached by about 3 miles of rough gravel road. Daylight only.
